Sprints
Our Sprints Program, for athletes aged 9 and above, focuses on developing speed, explosive power, and sprinting technique and is led by James Vancliff. Athletes are placed in groups based on their age, experience and skill level. Whether a young athlete is new to sprints or looking to refine their performance, this program provides expert coaching in all aspects of sprinting, from starts to finishes.
Athletes will work on improving their acceleration, stride mechanics, and race strategy, with tailored training for different sprint distances. With a combination of drills, strength training, and race simulations, athletes will have the opportunity to enhance their speed and achieve personal bests, with the potential to progress to county, regional, and even national competitions. Training Sessions:
Junior (School Year 5/6 – 8) + Intermediate (School Year 9 – 12) Sprints: Monday starting at 19:00 (90 mins) at Mill Lane Track
A typical session will start with a warm-up to get the major muscle groups ready for athletic activity. Young athletes will then typically undertake a series of drills to practice balance and help to build core and general strength, followed by a series of games and tasks to improve agility, balance, co-ordination and reaction time. The session will always finish with a warm-down.
Please note: During the winter, this session will take place in the large hall in the Scout Hut which is located next to the Mill Lane car park. During the summer, sessions will normally be outside on the track unless the weather is poor or inclement, when it will again take place inside the Scout Hut.
Athletes should bring suitable clothing for the weather and a water bottle.
Please note that changing facilities are fairly limited at the Mill Lane Track so athletes normally come ready changed for their session.
