The end of the cross-country season was marked this year with a celebration at the clubhouse at Mill Lane Recreation Ground. Many thanks to the Holland Sports and Social Association that booked and covered the cost of a band for the evening. The Association is a group of dedicated volunteers that look after the clubhouse as well as the four sports that use the facilities at Mill Lane – football, darts, fishing and athletics.

As part of the Association, we have benefited this year by receiving funding for the entire cost of the shelters that now grace the track at Mill Lane and which are being used each week by all the junior and senior athletes at Holland Sports, as well as other community groups when the weather is wet or inclement. We will also benefit from part-funding of equipment to keep the track in good condition – part of our project to bring the entire track back into use for the sprint, middle distance and jump groups at Holland Sports.

A lovely evening, our end-of season ‘shin-dig’, brought a season that included hosting two cross-country fixtures, three Surrey League wins for Jack Kavanagh, a men’s team medal at the County Champs, improved performances from everyone within the men’s and women’s team individually, a third place for our debutant Under 20 lady, Alice M. and survival in League 1 by just 7 team positions on the last day for the Holland Sports women – to a fantastic close.

If you want to be part of the fun next year – pop along to a track session on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, or e-mail either Rob or Neil via the website: it’s a lot of fun and you’ll be joining a great group of people.
